Summer 2016, I, along with 8 friends, founded a non-profit organization called UNMUTED.
LGBTQIA+ group in China is muted in mainstream media. We want their voices heard by bringing back discussion for sensitive topics and facilitating communications between LGBTQIA+ group and rest of China. We mainly use social experiments and film productions to raise awareness, the following are some of our productions.
This film is our major production. It is made possible by NYU Social Entrepreneurship Institute's ChangeMaker Challenge. It talks about the stories of 5 queers in China:
We want to see the reactions of general public towards LGBTQIA+ group. 2016 summer, Hangzhou's subway, two actors perform as a gay couple and another two actors come forward and scold their behaviors. We use actors because we couldn’t find LGBTQIA+ people in China that are out-of-closets and willing to be filmed. We recorded the reactions from the audience:
The Series below is inspired by this social experiment.
We ask 10 Chinese students for an interview and they give their thoughts about the LGBTQ group in China. Out of their expectations, an actress/actor (due to lack of out of closet LGBTQ in China) acting lesbian/gay come out and talk with the interviewee. We observe the change of attitudes towards LGBTQ group before and after. In the end, the actress/actor asks for a hug:
We organized a team of folks (both from LGBTQIA+ group or outside of it) to join the annual Hangzhou International Marathon where we put out rainbow flags and raise awareness to pedestrians.
